Thanks to the 2010 Affordable Care Act, Medicare and other insurances do offer coverage for obesity screening for all adults and even treatment for all eligible adults.
What does Medicare offer for weight loss? Medicare covers intensive counseling to help you lose weight. This counseling may be covered if you get it in an eligible place such as eligible doctors office (most W8MD medical weight loss centers do participate in Medicare and can help), where it can be coordinated with your other care and a personalized prevention plan.

Is there any cost to the patient?
You pay nothing for this service if the primary care doctor or other qualified primary care practitioner accepts assignment.
Intensive Behavioral Therapy for Obesity (IBT) The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recognizes the crucial role that health care providers play in educating Medicare beneficiaries about potentially life-saving preventive services and screenings, and in providing these services. While Medicare pays for a variety of preventive benefits, many Medicare beneficiaries do not fully realize that using preventive services and screenings can help them live longer, healthier lives.
What Does Medicare Cover? A screening visit for obesity for all adults irrespective of their weight. If you are over with a body mass index of 27 or more with one or more obesity related conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc. you will qualify. Or your body mass index is 30 or over, you would automatically qualify for obesity treatment.
Medicare will cover the following: •An initial assessment of your eating and activity habits •Counseling on diet and physical activity of up to 22 visits to qualified health care providers for weight loss and if you manage to lose 6.6 pounds in 6 months, coverage will be extended for another 6 months with biweekly visits. •Education on how to improve your diet and changes that will help you lose weight and improve your health •Follow-up visits to monitor your diet and weight loss progress.

About W8MD medical weight loss centers of America’s program
If you are overweight and have excess abdominal fat, a weight-related medical problem, or a family history of such problems, you need to lose weight. Healthy diets and exercise can help people maintain a healthy weight, and may also help them lose weight. It is important to recognize that overweight is a chronic condition which can only be controlled with long-term changes. To reduce caloric intake, eat less fat and control portion sizes. If you are not physically active, spend less time in sedentary activities such as watching television, and be more active throughout the day. As people lose weight, the body becomes more efficient at using energy and the rate of weight loss may decrease. Increased physical activity will help you to continue losing weight and to avoid gaining it back.
Did you know that 1 in 3 people have insulin resistance or are considered “prediabetic” which could be the main reason that people are overweight? Losing just5-10% of your weight will help you reduce risks of heart attacks, diabetes and even some cancers.
